What are your dreams? Are they the mundane or the extraordinary?
Your dreams are windows into the possibilities that can be achieved. It is safe to say that if you can dream it, then you can achieve it. Ranging from the small and “every-day” dreams, to the phenomenal and incredible dreams. The truth is that it is important to have both kinds of dreams.
When you think about the phrase “reach for your dreams” it is probably the apparent big and seemingly unreachable dreams that you set your sights to. And this is good. It is important to have dreams that stretch you, that excite and scare you. The reason for you having these dreams is to grow and to live a life that is worth living. It doesn’t matter how big or unattainable the dreams may seem to you at the time.
All throughout history there have been individuals that have been shunned, mocked and even killed for having the fortitude to live to their dreams. "Great spirits have often encountered violent opposition from weak minds." So don’t feel like you are the only one, this isn’t a new thing. In fact, most of those who you would consider successful, were at some point, told by someone, that their dreams were too big, and that they should get their heads out of the clouds.
Don’t be afraid or embarrassed to reach for your dreams. Let your mind be free and go for the big dreams, the ones that, at the time, seem unattainable. Set something that is so extraordinary that when you achieve it you will know the measure of your success!
Simultaneously it is important to have small dreams. Achieving the small and easily reachable dreams gives you the belief in yourself that you can achieve your desire, that you can get to where you want to be, and that your dreams can be real. If your big dreams are just too much for you to fully fathom right away, then set some small goals which will boost your belief in yourself.
Small goals can be anything from exercising a certain number of times each week, or cutting down on how much you smoke. Anything that gives you the satisfaction and self-esteem boost upon completion is good. Continuing to accomplish these small goals and you will build the confidence to take yourself to where you want to be.
Look at the small goals as stepping stones, that will take you to the top. Success comes from setting goals of both types. You need the big goals to motivate you toward success, and you need the little goals to help you gain confidence and discipline along the way.
