Cat Communication: What is My Cat Trying to Say?

by KALE MCCLELLAND

Any cat owner needs to know a few cat communication tactics. It makes it easier to train your cat, and also to know what your cat wants instead of guessing all the time. It's simple. You can actually learn a great deal about you cats language, just by watching them and taking mental note of what they do, or vocalize in what type of situation.They are always trying to talk to you, have just have to pay attention.

The first thing you need to realize, is that your cat has a different way of vocalizing a certain situation. You can actually learn the your cats language if you listen to them. Everyone is aware of a cat purring when it's happy, but did you know they also purr when they are in pain. Another common sound is hissing, or spitting. This means your cat needs some space, and is trying to express that to you, your family, or other pets in the home. They also make a kittenish mew when they need a little affection, or are feeling left out. If you take the time to listen you'll pick up on many other different sounds they make and what they mean. If there are no other cats in the home, you'll even notice them start to pick up on your tones, and other tones around the house.

If you are looking at your cat's tail, you'll find that it has a story of its own. For instance, when your cat is occupied or hunting, you'll find that only the tip of the tail is twitching. The more the tail is waving or lashing through the air, the more upset your cat is. You might also find that that a long sweep of the tail is a sign that your cat is getting fed up or getting ready to leave the room.

Now, when a cat is kneading something its another way of express what they feel. When they do it to you, they are showing they are comfortable, and it can even be a sign of affection. This can also be shown by lying in front of you and rolling around on their backs. You'll also notice that your cat will knead if they need to get comfortable on a bed, or blanket, but this type of kneading will be more aggressive. The gentle, comfortable sign of kneading can also be done to a favorite blanket or toy, and most likely only done on their favorite people.

Another good sign to watch for is heading butting. Head butting you on your head or face is a form of hello. They would do this to another cat in their pack if there was one. Rubbing their lips on you or anything else means it's a safe zone, or a marking of their territory. If you are approaching them and they fall to their side that means they have a great sense of trust in you. This could turn into a sign of affection by them rolling around on their backs.

Take a little time and figure out your cat. This will come in handy when your training them, or trying to stop excessive meowing. The don't meow for no reason at all. They are trying to tell you something is NOT ok. Plus, it will connect you and further deepen your relationship with your cat.

Howling and Barking Problems

by KALE MCCLELLAND

Excessive howling or barking can be a real nuisance with dogs. The key to understanding your dog's howling and barking is to understand its roots. Dogs are pack animals that use howling or barking to communicate. Because we have brought dogs into our homes and lives, we have become a part of their pack. As a result, they communicate to us just as they would other dogs. Sometimes this is through inappropriate dominance behavior, but sometimes this is through vocalization.

Because we generally don't enjoy being barked or howled at, our dogs need to be taught to ignore their nature and turn down the volume a bit. By praising your dog when they are quiet, you teach them that their quiet moments are when they get the most attention from you. When your dog does begin to howl or bark, sternly rebuke them. When they calm down, praise your dog. Your dog lives for your praise and will pick up on things quickly.

It's extremely important that you don't punish your dog for barking. It comes naturally to them, and the way people punish their dog for barking only confuses them. Most people make the mistake of yelling "No!" at the dog, and then they smack the dog on the nose. This confuses them extremely since they have already stopped barking from the yelling, they don't need to be smacked. The associate the smack on the nose with the fact that they stopped barking.

One form of aversive training that does work is the no-bark collar. No-bark collars are often criticized as being a harsh form of negative reinforcement, but they are a safe and effective quick-fix to a howling or barking problem. A no-bark collar's sensors detect the dog's barking or howling and either emits a sound or spray of citronella - letting the dog know what's coming next. If the barking does not stop, the collar then emits a short, mild electrical shock. The dog then knows that it is time to stop. There are even some no-bark collars that lack the electric shock and just use the citronella spray. There have been reports that these collars are just as effective, if not more so, than the shock collars.

Dogs are remarkably quick learners. After just a few barking incidents, your dog will know that when they hear the beep or smells the citronella, that it is time to stop barking. After a short duration, the no-bark collar can usually be removed, as the dog will be broken of the undesirable behavior.

At the end of the day, all you need to remember is that although a dog is a man's best friend, they were originally meant for another purpose one that may conflict with what you want out of your dog. Dogs enjoy communicating with you and with each other through howling and barking, but we humans don't enjoy it quite so much. Fortunately, you can control your dog's natural inclination to bark or howl through prevention via positive reinforcement at an early age or with a gentle form of aversive training, such as a no-bark collar.

Ferrets-Getting Started With Your Passion

By: Graham Williams

Would you like to know more about ferrets but just do not know where to begin or look? There are millions of other ferret owners who are overwhelmed by the large volumes of information available to them, about this charming and often comical furry creature. You may be trying to get a pet ferret, or living with someone who already has a ferret. You may all so simply be interested in the behaviour of these musk-producing mammals, here are a few basic things that you can consider first, before you get started with keeping a ferret and it becomes a passion.
Ferrets like skunk’s are also able to produce musk. Some countries allow you to remove the glands responsible for their musk production, this obviously will stop them smelling so much. But in countries like the United Kingdom and Australia you will find that this is not really necessary.
There fur is shiny and smooth to touch because of the natural oils produced by them. Regular bathing will remove some of these oils, which is not a good thing for your pets health. They also grow long nails, so a regular nail-cutting session will be in order for ferret owners.
There are many different colors and breeds available for pet owners. Breeding them is quite easy, especially when the ferret is mated with a pole cat, this was often done in ancient times. The younger the ferret is, the more difficult it is to look after. But then if you are able to obtain one that is still a kit, you will have the advantage of training it from a very young age.
As they grow older, they will need the company of other ferrets. Older ferrets will often will display domination or superiority to the younger ferrets. They also have the tendency to develop very close almost family like cliques and may not be as open to accept new ferrets in their circle easily. .
Regulations vary from country to country, so when you are caring for your ferret, always make sure that you are properly acquainted with the regulations of the country you live in. You will find that some countries do not allow ferrets to be domesticated and become house pets, while other countries have no restrictions on keeping them as pets.
By nature, ferrets are adventurous and curious creatures. you will need to interact with your pet at least once a day, this will help satisfy there curiosity and for them to be happy under your care. They also like to dance in a strange manner when excited and this may often look like they are ready to attack, but in reality, they are just expressing their enjoyment.
Since ferrets are extremely adventurous creatures, you will have to keep an eye on them frequently. They have the tendency to swallow objects that can be poisonous or damaging to their digestive system. On top of that if they are not constantly supervised, they may be prey to some other animals like snakes and hawks on there daily roam about,
Ferrets became popular as pets in America only in the 1980’s. Ferrets have been used for hunting for many years, mainly rabbits and rats, this is because they are well capable of entering rabbit warrens and tiny spaces. Their natural curiosity and lack of fear, makes them really effective aids to hunters. Even the Romans found many uses for them.

Collars Best For Poodles
by RICHARD CUSSONS

Poodles come in many colors and size - so do dog collars. There are many different types of collars a dog owner may choose from. Each one vary from another in terms of color, size and type. When you are out to shop for collars intended for your Poodles, you have to make sure that what you chose is appropriate for these proud dogs.
An owner may choose a collar that looks good around the neck of his pet. But this should not be the primary factor in choosing a perfect collar for there are more important things than just pleasing appearance. Safety, use and convenience should come first.
The most common type of collar is flat collar or buckle collar. Identification such as your dog's name, your name and contact info are usually attached in this type of collar. So if unfortunately your Poodle got lost while you are having a walk or out to shop for his toys, there is a greater chance of having him back having your contact information attached on his neck. Poodles have dense coat that usually attracts the crowd - and fleas as well. Flea infestation in Poodles can be quite difficult to treat given this breed's coat. Therefore a flea collar is a great option when your dog is at high risk of being infested with fleas. This flea collar is impregnated with chemicals that repel fleas.
A collar can be a great training tool too. Slip collars, prong collars, martingale collars and electronic collars are types of collars commonly used when training a dog. These collars, despite each others differences in style and design, control and prevent a dog from doing things you do not want to.
A collar could be made of nylon, metal, cotton or leather. Nylon, metal and leather collars are certainly strong and will definitely control your dog regardless of the size. However, these materials can irritate the skin given the fact that Poodles have sensitive skin and are prone to skin problems. Choosing a collar made of cotton is therefore a great idea. And since Poodles have unique head shape, there are collars specifically created for them. One for example is a martingale Poodle collar, a collar that prevents a Poodle from slipping out of it.
When you have finally decided what type of collar is best for your four-legged friend, do not forget to get more information on their proper use. Get a collar that fits perfectly around the neck of your dog. It shouldn't be too tight to squeeze his esophagus nor too loose to let him slip out.

It is just like an ordinary bag only that the straps and the insides are sturdier. Moreover, the insides are lined with pads t give your pet the comfort it needs. Foods To Keep Poodles Healthy

Owners definitely want the best for their Poodles. From beds, collars and other stuff to grooming, vaccines and healthy foods - all these things are provided in pursuit of years of good health, happiness and friendship. But with the rapidly changing world and increase of prices from time to time, it is quite difficult to provide everything our pets need without having to spend much.
A lot of dog owners are spending much just to ensure the good health of their beloved pets. Pet food manufacturers in turn are doing their best to attract buyers to purchase their products. With so many pet food manufacturers with their elaborate advertisements, how will you know which one is best for your dog?
Naturally, the best diet for your beloved pet is the one you prepare yourself. The ingredients are wholesome meats and vegetables and are guaranteed fresh. However, some dog owners are too busy on other things that they find it impossible to spend time preparing meals for their pets. This is where commercial pet foods come in handy. Various brands with various types of pet foods line the shelves in pet stores and pet section of grocery stores each one is claiming better than the other. This reality creates a labyrinth in the minds of some dog owners.
To help the buyers, experts set guidelines in choosing a complete and balanced dog food. Assess your dog - breed, age, size and activity are some of the factors in determining the appropriate food. A puppy two months old has different nutritional needs from a dog two years of age. In addition, a Shih Tzu may have different energy levels compared to Poodles.
Check the product label focusing on the list of ingredients. The list should include proteins, vitamins, minerals and some essential fat such as beef fat, chicken fat or lamb fat. Whole meat should be the first ingredient. Choose one with few grains and fillers. A good dog food has no preservatives, no artificial colors, sugars and sweeteners. It does not contain syrup, sucrose, ammoniated glycyrrhizin or propylene glycol. If you have a two-month old puppy, consider buying a dog food specifically made for puppies. Most dog foods will tell you if they are for puppies, adults, older less active or dogs under specific diet.
Humans need foods in order to stay healthy, active and happy. The same way it goes for the dogs. Foods keep them fueled to let them do their stuff - running, playing ball, fetch and so on.

"First Aid for Felines - How to Keep Your Car Safe from Harm

Article Author:NS Kennedy

Cats are known for their curious and adventurous nature. Curiosity doesn't always kill the cat, but can often cause injury. The owner will likely have to get the cat stabilized before taking it to the veterinarian. Any home with a cat should have a feline first aid kit assembled and handy.
A first aid kit for a cat contains many of the same items it would for a human.
* A roll of absorbent cotton and some cotton balls,
* gauze pads and tape,
* a pair of small scissors with rounded tips,
* tweezers,
* instant ice pack,
* hydrogen peroxide,
* a bulb syringe for suctioning mucous from mouth or nose
* sterile eyewash solution for cats,
* a clean, white cotton sock (to cover wounded paws),
* small flashlight,
* rectal thermometer,
* injection syringe without the needle (to give liquid medication),
* unflavored electrolyte liquid (like Pedialyte).
Place all the items in a sturdy plastic container with a secure lid. Write your veterinarian's name and phone number on the lid, as well as that of the closest emergency pet hospital. If you travel often and leave your cat with another person, put several copies of a signed release form in the first aid kit authorizing the caregiver to approve necessary treatment.
Cat are great explorers and care must br taken with potential hazards in and around the home. particularly with young kittens. watch out for hot surfaces and liquids in the kitchen, unguarded fires, electric cables, sewing pins and needles (especially with cotton attached) and open windows on upper stories.
In the garden make sure the dustbins are secure as cats may scavenge and eat decayed food or cut themselves on tins or glass. Being inquisitive, cats accidentally get shut in a shed or garage.
If your cat is injured, approach her calmly and carefully. Don't assume that she won't scratch or bite you - injured pets often react negatively at first to any attempt to touch them. Once you get close enough, place a towel over her head to "blind" her. The darkness created by the towel has a calming effect. You can also tightly wrap the towel around her body to keep her from struggling.
If your cat is bleeding heavily, it is important to slow or stop the flow as soon as possible. Use a clean towel or cloth to apply pressure directly to the wound. Change towels/cloths as needed, but keep pressure on until you reach a veterinarian. If necessary, you can apply thick gauze pads and use tape to secure them while you transport your cat. It is best, however, to keep pressure on the wound and have some one else drive.
If your cat seems to be choking, use a flashlight to see what she is choking on. If you can easily remove it, do so. If not, you will might need to perform a modified Heimlich maneuver.
Here's what you need to do:
* Place the pet on its side on a hard surface.
* Place both hands behind the last rib and press down quickly and firmly - release immediately and repeat rapidly several times.
* Try to direct the force of your hands slightly forward - this will make your efforts more effective.
* Have someone carefully open the dog's or cat's mouth wide and attempt to retrieve the material from the throat as you compress the chest.
It is important to get proper training for this, as it can cause serious injury if done incorrectly. Many humane societies and animal welfare organizations offer classes on pet first aid, that include the Heimlich maneuver, CPR, and techniques for dealing with serious injury and poisoning.

"CORRECTING YOUR CAT'S BAD BEHAVIOUR - HOW TO DISCIPLINE YOU

Article Author:NS Kennedy

At some time or another even the sweetest cat "misbehaves." Ironically, a cat's bad act is usually quite normal behavior for her, but may have a result humans don't like or want. Screaming at the cat or physically punishing her won't alter negative behavior. The best way to change undesirable behavior is to eliminate the opportunity and/or distract the cat to an acceptable alternative.
Immediacy is vital: even seconds late may be ineffective. You must do it as soon as the cat starts misbehaving.
Distracting a cat away from an act is not very difficult. A loud, unfamiliar noise will quickly get her attention. Some cat owners use a low growling sound, others imitate the grating sound of a game show buzzer. Keeping the sound low-toned and harsh is important, because you want to save high-pitched sounds for praise and reinforcement of positive behaviors.
One well-known way to distract a misbehaving cat is to give her a blast with a spray bottle. While this works, it has some drawbacks. First, you must have the bottle in your hand at the exact moment the cat is about to act in a way you want to discourage. Unless you follow your cat around all day with a spray bottle in your hand, this is unlikely to happen. The second problem is that this technique seems to lose effectiveness after a while with some cats.
The best way to extinguish negative behaviors is to remove the opportunity. If your cat obsessively scratches the side of your couch, place a loose blanket or hard acrylic panel against it. Both techniques remove her access to the satisfying feel of the fabric. If she climbs your curtains, shredding them as she goes, fold or pin them out of her reach unless you are around to stop her. If she has accidents only when you are not home, only give her free run of the house when you are there. When you go out, close her in a room with food, water, litter box, scratching post and a couple of toys.
Avoid, at all times, any form of physical punishment. It doesn't matter if your vet or the "cat expert" down the street suggests it; physically punishing your cat will do more harm than good. Some people feel that a "little" tap on the cat's nose with your finger is an acceptable form of punishment because you are only using one finger. Humane group experts point out, however, that if you look at that finger in proportion to a cat's nose - a very sensitive body part - it would be like someone hitting you on the nose with a rolling pin.
You can try gently pushing the palm of your hand into the face of the cat. This is best used when discouraging something like biting. Don't hit the cat, simply push its face back gently.
Inflicting pain has a negative affect on your relationship with your cat. Even the most outgoing cat will back away from your hands, even if they are only reaching out to pet her. If your cat is shy to begin with, physical punishment can have even more deeply negative results.
Keep in mind, too, what you are communicating when you swat your cat. Swatting is one of the main ways cats fight with one another. When you swing your hand at your cat, she very well may take it as a challenge to fight. Constantly provoking her can create a serious aggression problem.

Cats are living longer lives thanks to dedicated care from their humans, and advances in veterinary medicine. Most experts consider a cat's "senior years" to begin on her 10th birthday. After this point, the aging process begins to slow in even the most playful feline. Yet, with a little extra attention from her owner, Miss Kitty might enjoy another 5-10 years of life and love.
Just as with humans, cats often lose the ability to hear as they age. This often goes unnoticed by owners, who might chalk their cat's lack of response to typical feline aloofness. Without keen hearing and vision, however, an older cat is more vulnerable to threats from cars and dogs on the street. It is best to keep an older cat indoors. If she loves the fresh air, make sure you supervise her in a protected area.
Even the most easygoing cat can become a finicky eater in her later years. As an older cat's senses of smell and taste begin to diminish, she becomes less interested in her food. Adding moist food and warming her meals will amplify the scent and make it more tantalizing. Moist food will increase the amount of water in your cat's diet.
It is important to keep fresh water available for your older cat, and to monitor her drinking habits. Her natural thirst drive can fade with age, causing her to become dangerously dehydrated rather quickly. Take note of about how much water your cat drinks each day. If the amount suddenly drops, and you know she is not getting water from any other source, contact your veterinarian.
Remember that there have been huge advances in medical care for cats in recent years. Online shopping for cat medication has become popular, but remember that there is no substitute for regular check-ups with your veterinarian.
Common problems owners see their geriatric cats develop include difficulties swallowing due to decreased saliva production, less tolerance to extreme heat and/or cold, gum disease and tooth loss, a change in litter habits, and not sleeping well.
Recent studies have uncovered a problem with potassium balance in many older cats. Poor coat condition, loss of appetite and lethargy have been linked to a mild form of hypokalemia, or low blood potassium. Low blood potassium damages the cat's kidneys, which, in an older cat, are already weakening. This leads to a vicious cycle because declining kidney function increases the loss of potassium in the blood, which in turn causes further deterioration of the kidneys.
Arthritis and stiffness is fairly common in older cats. Because it becomes more difficult to move, a geriatric cat spends more time sleeping. If her diet stays the same, she'll begin to pack on the pounds. The extra weight adds to her discomfort, making her more inclined not to move. Without exercise her muscles will weaken. It is important to encourage an older cat into some activity every day. Physical movement will help with digestion and bowel function, as well as keep her sharp mentally.
An older cat spends less time grooming herself than in her youth. As a result, her hair becomes dry and painfully matted. Regular grooming from her owner is required to keep her coat healthy and beautiful. Daily brushing removes loose hair that can form uncomfortable hairballs in her stomach.
As your cat gets older its important that she is comfortable. You should ensure that your cat has a comfortable, warm bed that she can stretch out on. Cushions and hammock bed on radiators are popular.
